What would have happened if Russell had been overconcerned with his son’s eating and had the cook make another pudding for him or bring some other substitute? The natural consequence of hunger would have been lost, and the boy would have continued to expect the world to revolve around his whims. Experiencing a little disappointment, displeasure, and discomfort from misbehavior provides the motivation to challenge one’s own decisions and make better choices in the future. Kids robbed of that motivation will usually continue to make the same mistakes and misbehavior over and over again.
Consider the following examples of natural consequences and where you might use them to help you redirect misbehavior in your home:
When Jenny left her favorite book outside and it got rained on, her mother was sympathetic but gently refused to buy her a new one.
When Tyler refused to wear his mittens to go outside and play in the snow, his dad did not fight with him. Later, when Tyler’s hands were cold, his father gently asked him if he would like to go back inside and get those mittens.
When the waiter told Lisa not to touch her plate because it was hot, Lisa reached right over and touched it. She looked up with hurt and surprise, saying, “It’s hot!”
